Poppy Field Picnic

YOU GUYS...this might be one of my favorite blog posts to date. The other weekend myself, Jeff and our friends Caleb and Marinna hopped in our hatch-back and drove to the ever-instagrammable Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve. After Southern California experienced her long awaited "Super Bloom," the reserve was flooded with visitors and my social media feed was flooded with photos of the spectacular orange hills.

Located about 2 hours outside of LA, the reserve offers guests the chance to park and stroll through the poppies. Because the park has a strict "path-only" approach to the experience, we took it upon ourselves to stop about a mile down the road to explore the fields with a bit more freedom. I love ideas like this, when one person says, "Hey, let's stop HERE," and it ends up radically transforming the experience you thought you would have.

This day was all about collaboration, and it made me so grateful to have the friends I do. Marinna was itching to go the fields and Caleb equally excited to shoot some photos of it all. I wanted to plan a picnic that showcased the beauty of California and alas - our ideas converged on this fateful Saturday. We could have merely walked around and snapped a few photos. I knew we would be peckish by the afternoon, so why not pack a picnic and immerse ourselves in the splendor while we're at it?

*HOSTING TIP* If you are going somewhere beautiful for the afternoon, why not pack a meal and enjoy it on site? I stocked our favorite Picnic Basket (a wedding gift from my in-laws) with chicken salad wraps, veggie crips, fresh fruit, sparkling water and macaroons. What's a picnic without a little dessert? I wanted it to feel more like a brunch tablescape than a trail meal and so I was sure to pack my CorningWear to make sharing a little easier. And of course it added to the pleasantness of our already peaceful surroundings.

I hope you enjoy a look at our picnic in the poppy fields.  A HUGE thank you to Jeff and Marinna for coming along for the ride and to Caleb for capturing the day. I am already planning our next epic picnic adventure. Leave your recommendations in the comments below!

Until next time!
